Larry Page and Sergey Brin named the search engine that they built “Google”, a play on the word “googol”, the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. Google Inc. was born in 1998, when Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim wrote a cheque for $100,000 to that entity, which until then didn’t exist. Google specialises in Internet-related services and products, including online advertising technologies, search, cloud computing, and software. Most of its profits are derived from AdWords. The $17 billion Google has spent over the last two years on U.S. acquisitions alone shows that Google is now pushing boldly into robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, connected devices, and wearable devices.
