Rosneft is the leader of Russia’s petroleum industry and the world’s largest publicly traded petroleum company. Its activities include hydrocarbon exploration and production, upstream offshore projects, hydrocarbon refining, and crude oil, gas and product marketing in Russia and abroad. Rosneft became Russia’s leading extraction and refinement company after purchasing assets of former oil giant Yukos at state-run auctions. In March 2013, it became the largest publicly traded oil company after buying TNK-BP. In August 2014, it was announced that the Russian government was preparing to sell a 19.5% stake in the company and would most likely sell it in two tranches.
